Will it fit? Almost certainly. What changes with a motorhome, caravan or trailer on the Puttgarden Rødby ferry is the price, which depends on the length, and the measurement includes the bike rack and the drawbar. A vehicle registered as a motorhome travels at the car fare, whatever it weighs. If you are towing up from the Channel ports, the length band is the one thing to get right before you book, because the check-in cameras in Puttgarden do look at what arrives.

- Everything attached to the vehicle is measured. Scandlines says so explicitly: bikes on a rear rack or a luggage box count towards the length. A 5.99-metre panel van with bikes on the back is no longer a 6-metre vehicle.
- Motorhomes travel at the car fare, however heavy they are. The condition: the vehicle is registered as a motorhome. The 3,500 kg limit that applies to cars and vans then does not matter.
- Vans count as cars if they are registered as a car and have no more than 9 seats, 3,500 kg and 6 metres.
- Scandlines does not publish the supplement as a fixed amount. It depends on the band, the fare and the season. Enter your real length in the booking and you will see the price. If the booked length is wrong, expect to pay the difference at check-in, and the check-in cameras do look at the vehicle.
Lanes and height in Puttgarden
The check-in in Puttgarden sorts vehicles by length before you reach the booths: the overhead displays say “Max 6 m Self Service” above the car lanes, and a separate sign with caravan, motorhome and truck symbols points longer vehicles to their own lanes. So a car with a caravan does not queue with the cars. In the waiting area we saw a Grand California campervan in a normal numbered lane, so under 6 metres nothing changes for you.
We did not find an official height limit for this route on the Scandlines website and we did not photograph a height sign in Puttgarden. The ferries carry trucks on the same decks, so normal motorhomes of 2.8 to 3.3 metres are not an issue. If you come close to 4 metres with a roof box, a satellite dish or kayaks, ask Scandlines customer service before you book which deck tall vehicles are parked on.
The ferries are double-ended: you drive on at one end and off at the other, without reversing or turning. The crew directs every vehicle into place.
Which ticket for a motorhome or a car with caravan
Low Price, the cheapest fare from 48 euros, applies to cars up to 6 metres and is tied to exactly one departure. With a compact motorhome under 6 metres it is an option if your schedule is fixed. For anything longer, and for anyone with a long drive to the port, Standard (from 61.10 euros plus length supplement) is the sensible fare: if you miss your departure because the A1 is jammed, you take the next ferry with free space on the same day, which on this route is usually half an hour later. With a caravan on the back, that is the most common problem.
One warning for high season: the spaces for long vehicles can sell out faster than those for cars. Book early for July and August and expect your preferred Saturday morning departure to be full. Check-in and boarding with a long vehicle
Officially, checking in 15 minutes before departure is enough. With a caravan or trailer you should be there 45 minutes ahead: you are directed into a waiting lane and have time to calmly pack everything you need for the crossing. In Puttgarden the E47 leads straight to the booths, and in Rødbyhavn it is the same at the end of the motorway. Both approaches are wide and have no tight bends, so they are easy with a caravan.
- Turn off the gas before you drive on board. That is standard on ferries.
- Handbrake on, in gear, alarm off. Motion sensors tend to go off on a ferry.
- Take everything upstairs with you: you cannot go back to the car deck during the crossing. That includes what is in the fridge and the dog food.
- For 45 minutes the fridge runs on 12 volts only, or not at all. For this short crossing that is not a problem.
Driving on through Denmark: what matters for campers
Good news first: there are no tolls between Rødby and Copenhagen. If you continue to Sweden, you pay by length on the Øresund Bridge: vehicles from 6 to 10 metres cost 940 DKK at the toll station and 840 DKK online (price list from 14 September 2026), twice the price of a car. This is where a comparison with a combination ticket and with the Helsingør Helsingborg ferry really pays off.
Your first night does not have to be in Copenhagen: Lolland and Falster have campsites near Rødby, Maribo and Marielyst, and Møn with its chalk cliffs is about an hour and a half away. If you are coming from Berlin or the east, also check Rostock Gedser: a longer crossing, the same length rules.
